Hem T-shirts with stretch twin needles to create elastic seams and give them a professional look.

    Application

With the stretch twin needle you can create professional-looking seams on your T-shirts and other knitwear – even without using a coverlock machine: with your normal household sewing machine you can sew two exactly parallel, elastic seams at the bottom. Use two needle threads on the top seam at the same time.

The medium ball point of the needles ensures that the loops are gently pushed aside without damage. This helps prevent holes. Thanks to the special shaft, the needle is closer to the hook. In combination with the special scarf section, this prevents skipped stitches, even in very stretchy knit fabrics.

The Stretch twin needle is particularly suitable for hemming and topstitching of (very) elastic knitted fabrics, e.g. jersey, velor jersey, knitted cotton, swimwear fabrics.

    Before you start sewing

The stretch twin needle can be used on conventional household sewing machines with a zigzag function. Like other household needles, it also inserts into the needle bar: from your perspective, the flat side of the shaft points away from you.

The stitch plate and presser foot must have a recess large enough for the selected needle spacing.

Tip: Turn on twin mode or use a similar button on your sewing machine (if equipped) to limit the stitch width. This prevents the needle from accidentally hitting the stitch plate and breaking it.

    Threading the needle

    • A separate spool of thread is required for each of the two needles. If you do not have a second thread holder, use a bobbin for the second thread and place it on the bobbin holder under the spool of thread with the first thread.
    • Make sure that the bobbin and spool of thread unwind in the same direction.
    • You can use the same color of thread for both needles or different colors for decorative effects.
    • Pass the two wires together through the guide element of your machine as if they were one wire. Then separate the wires and pass one wire through each eye. Some machines have special wire cutting tools. In this case, follow the special threading instructions of your machine.

    Keep in mind that:
The automatic needle threader does not work with twin needles!

    Tips

    • Check the thread tension in advance with a few test stitches. You can use leftover fabric for this. Adjust the thread tension so that the bobbin thread has a slight zigzag shape along the seam. This allows the seam to stretch.
    • For thicker pieces of fabric, reduce the sewing speed slightly to avoid needle breakage.
    • Do not push or pull the fabric while sewing. This can lead to uneven stitch length and, in the worst case, needle breakage.
    • To get a nice, smooth seam without bulges, you can use starch spray before sewing or use a water-soluble stabilizer while sewing.
